Midterm Project: Self Portrait
Self Portrait
Ice
My first thought is to work with ice. I chose to use ice because ice is just low-temperature water. 70% of our human body consists of water, and when it's turned into ice, it suddenly gains that subtle quality. What I am trying to do is to first extract food pigments from fruits or vegetables. It will be best if the pigment dries a different color. A great example would be purple kale. The quality of changing color during drying relates to my personality traits, that is, I show varied dimensions to different peoples. Then I will fill the food dye into the mold. I am thinking about using plastic gloves so that the ice becomes hand shapes. The handshape represents my identity as an artist since I learned about myself by producing works.
Black Surfaces
The second idea is to work with the concept how my exterior personality is different from my inner souls. This piece is going to be an art performance. I will first choose a bunch of round shaped fruits and vegetables. Then I will paint the outside surface with black acrylic or gesso or squid ink. Then during the presentation, the room should be completely dark and there is going to be a spotlight which focuses just on my hand and the black fruits. I will cut all the balls into halves and show to the audience what is inside.
